One Good Way To Save Space

October 31, 2008
Not all of us can have spacious homes.  Therefore, for people who have to make do with a small flat, it is essential to save space.  If it is the case with you, I would suggest getting corner shelves like this one:

Since they occupy the corner, they certainly save up space as there are only a few home furnishings you can add in a corner.  Also, they look really good and they would certainly be the center of attention in your room.

A Log Home Look

October 30, 2008
A log home has always had some sort of attachment to people.  I’m sure a lot of people want to know how it is to live in a log cabin with all the comforts of modern technology inside.  But having a log cabin means maintenance costs.
With a steel log-siding though, you can get that look without those costly maintenance.  Also, it is cheaper to install than real logs.  They are made to be realistic and I’m sure they could fool almost anyone unless they knock on it.

For The Minimalist

Some people would go for home furnishings with lots of fancy trappings while some would opt for those with minimalist design.  If you belong in the latter group, then you would love this:

This single lever faucet embodies everything that is minimalist.  The sleek styling makes it a good addition to any kitchen with contemporary furniture pieces.  Also, it makes it easier to clean the faucet if it has nothing of the frills that other faucet has.

October 28, 2008

Just because most locks are circular, it does not mean that you cannot have something like this:

The first thing that you will notice about this deadbolt of course is its shape.  Since it is not ordinary, it grabs your attention right away the same thing that will do to your guests’ attention.  You might like the finish and the fact that it might be a discount furniture but what will make this stand out is its shape.

The Pros Of Having A Towel Warmer

October 27, 2008
On first glance, you might think having a towel warmer means additional energy consumption for your home.  But I think that there are reasons why people still buy towel warmers even if they do cost $100 upwards.
Towel warmers are actually energy efficient as it does not only warm up your towels but the bathroom as a whole.  This means that you do not have to use hot water for the shower especially during non-winter months. Also, since you have a warm towel waiting for you in the morning, you could choose not to turn on your heating system early in the morning.  This is especially true if you will only stay a few hours at home in the morning before going to work.

Create An Instant View

October 24, 2008
Sometimes, you just can’t get what you want.  For example, you may want a seaside home but can’t afford it.  If that’s the case, then maybe, a virtual window like this could help:

For rooms in your home with a not too interesting view like the wall of your neighbor’s home, billboards, or any unflattering view, this type of home accessory would be a great addition.  There are different trims for this virtual window so you can easily find one that will match your home design.

Wine Barrels Make Good Floor Boards

October 23, 2008
If you have unlimited resources and you want your floor boards to look really interesting then you could go for reclaimed wine barrels.  This is really expensive as it could cost you about $35 for square foot and that does not include the installation fee yet.  Since these are pretty expensive, I don’t think you would install them yourself for fear of damaging even a single piece.
To make it look more interesting, you can order panels which have winery stamps.  This is good for homes with rustic style as the color of these wine barrels has that warm feel.

Are you tired of cleaning soap gunk from your kitchen tiles?  Maybe it’s because you are using that sponge holder which you just let sit near the sink.  You can get rid of this problem by using a sponge holder which rests inside the sink.  Browse amazon.com and you’ll find a sponge holder with suction cups allowing them to be attached to the side of the sink.  This means you can have dry your sponge easily as the water drains down to the sink.  Also, these sponge holders are made out of stainless steel so you do not have to worry about rust.

Walking On Glass

October 18, 2008
If you think your garden does not have that appeal you are looking for, maybe you are missing some glass stones.  With glass stones I mean stepping stones which are actually made out of glass.  Surely I jest?  Not really.
Usually, you would see stepping stones in a garden made out of concrete or real stones.  But there are glass stepping stones which you can add to your garden.  You do not have to worry about it breaking though as these have been designed to withstand the rigors of being exposed to the elements and being constantly stepped upon.  For more on glass stones, click here.

Tiles Don’t Have To Be Flat

October 17, 2008
If you opt to use tiles for your walls, you might get tired with flat tiles.  Of course, tiles are supposed to be flat right?  Actually, no.  There are tiles which are textured that they can no longer be classified as flat.
These tiles may cost more than your ordinary tiles but that’s the price you have to pay if you want your walls to stand out.  With different designs of textured tiles you will have no trouble picking out the style which will suit the design of your home.

Paint Your Floors Too

While there is most debate between carpet or hardwood floors, there is one alternative open to you.  And that is painting your floor.  This is not a new idea as it has been around for decades.  In fact, painting floors outdated painting walls.
The advantage of painting your floor is that you can give it a pattern you can have using tiles or carpets with less expense.  To protect the paint, you have to varnish it.  So if you are the kind of person who is into do-it-yourself projects, you should give this a try.

Bamboo Blinds For The Patio

October 15, 2008
The sun is a good thing but too much of it could distract you while you relax on your patio.  Even if you have awnings, chances are, you’ll still get a lot of sunshine during sunset or sunrise.  So, if you want to have a relaxing afternoon in your patio protected from the harsh sunlight, then you have to get a blind for your patio.  And for that, I would suggest getting one made out of bamboo.

Why bamboo?  One is because it looks really cool.  And the second is that it is made from an easily renewable resource.

Color Combination For Colonial Homes

October 9, 2008
If you bought an early colonial home and you are looking to renovate it, your main problem would be lighting.  While you can make it look brighter using lighting fixtures, you can do the same using colors.  White is always a good bet to make a room look brighter.  Choose plain white and also, you can achieve a better look by using furniture and fixtures in light colors.  Also, you can use earthly colors to compliment the light colors used on walls.  For the flooring, earthly colored carpets and hardwood flooring should be used.  Apart from making the walls look brighter, it would make a room look larger than it is.

Personalize Your Planters

It is not always that you get a personalized item as large as an outdoor planter.  So if you can afford to have a planter engraved with your name and your address, you should grab the opportunity.  There are companies out there specializing in the creation of polyresin planters which can have your name monogrammed on it.

This is yet another way of fusing yourself in the décor of your home.  Since it’s your home, it only makes sense that you decorate it with things that you like and of course, things that you are.

Make A Pond Without All The Digging

October 8, 2008
If you can spare some space in your garden for a pond, then you should go and make one.  But, with the cost of making a pond, you might have second thoughts.  Also, if you are willing to take on the project alone, then you have to do all the digging and the landscaping.

If you want to have a pond without all that backbreaking digging, you just might as well buy a cedar pond made to hold 200 gallons of water.  You could add fishes in this pond and do landscaping to make it look more appealing.

Use Recycled Materials

October 4, 2008
Everywhere in your home, you should strive to stay green.  With the global warming crisis we are facing today, you can help in your own little way in the protection of the environment.  You can do this by buying eco-friendly appliances and saving energy.

And when it comes to buying new home décor or home accents, it is recommended that you purchase products which have been made from recycled materials.  With the global warming issue picking up steam day after day, more and more industries are answering the call including home furnishing manufacturers so it would be easier now to find home furnishings made from recycled materials.
